The Technique Came First, the Instruments Second
The endoscopic forehead lift was demonstrated before there were instruments to perform it properly. Oscar Ramirez used an endoscope in a biplanar forehead lift in January 1992 and presented it that April in Baltimore, and the limiting factor recorded at the time was not technique but the lack of specific instrumentation for working under a flap. The patterns carrying his name, and Rollin Daniel's, were designed to remove that limit.
The approach reaches the same result as an open coronal forehead lift while substantially reducing two of its costs: postoperative numbness of the scalp, and the hair loss that follows a long coronal incision. It does that by working through short incisions in a subperiosteal and subgaleal plane, which means every instrument has to reach the orbital rim through a corridor it cannot open wide. The Daniel Family: Elevation, Nerve Protection, Division
The Daniel family covers the working steps once the plane is open. Straight or Contoured? Choose Against the Anatomy
Shaft geometry is the selection rule that runs across both families. Contoured and curved shafts follow the frontal bone and suit dissection across the forehead itself; straight shafts are used laterally, on the temporal dissections at the outer edges where there is no curve to follow. Choosing against the anatomy rather than the label is what keeps the tip in plane.
Three further patterns sit outside the two main families. Material, Reprocessing and Certification
Every pattern is forged from German stainless steel and passivated for corrosion resistance across repeated cycles. The inspection point is the shaft and the tip together: sight down the shaft against a straight edge, because these instruments work at length through a narrow corridor and a slight bend puts the tip somewhere the surgeon is not looking. Check the working edge for rounding, and on suction patterns confirm the lumen is clear along its full length. Clean immediately with a neutral-pH enzymatic solution, flushing suction lumens before residue dries, then rinse with deionised water and dry fully before autoclaving at 134°C.
