Osteotome or Gouge? Plane or Curve
Osteotomes split bone along a plane; gouges lift it off a curve. That is the whole distinction, and it decides which family a procedure needs. Mini Lexer Osteotomes run 2mm to 10mm cutting widths on a 180mm shaft, and Mini Fine Hand Osteotomes run 2mm to 12mm on a shorter 165mm shaft. The shorter shaft keeps the hand closer to the bone in confined exposures; the longer one buys reach where soft tissue sits between the entry and the working surface.
Mini Lexer Gouges cover the curved-edge work at 4mm to 10mm on 180mm shafts. A scooped edge follows a contour a straight blade cannot, which is what osteophyte removal, joint surface preparation and graft harvesting from small bone require. Small Stille Type Mallet drives all of them with a nylon face, softening each strike so the force arriving at a phalanx is a controlled pulse rather than a full-weight transfer. Why a Removable Blade Changes the Approach Angle
Flexible chisels answer a different constraint. A fixed-blade osteotome has to enter along the axis its handle allows, and in a confined hand or foot exposure that axis is often unavailable. A removable-blade system separates the two: the introducer handle is positioned first, and blades of different widths and curvatures lock into it once it is in place, so one handle carries several profiles and the approach angle is no longer set by the blade.

Material, Reprocessing and Certification
Every pattern is manufactured from German stainless steel and passivated for corrosion resistance across repeated cycles, with a nylon striking face on the mallet. Inspection differs by family and each point matters at these dimensions: on osteotomes and gouges check the cutting edge under magnification, because a 2mm edge has almost no material behind it and a chip that would be tolerable on a wide blade removes a meaningful fraction of this one; check striking ends for mushrooming, since a spread face throws mallet force off axis; on the mallet check the nylon face for cracking or looseness in its seat; and on removable-blade systems confirm the locking mechanism engages fully and the blade seats without play. Clean immediately with a neutral-pH enzymatic solution, dismantling removable-blade assemblies first, then rinse with deionised water and dry fully, following the reprocessing instructions supplied.
