Westcott, Vannas or Stitch: Which Pattern for Which Tissue?
Westcott scissors carry short, sharp, slightly curved blades built for conjunctival and muscle dissection in strabismus surgery, Vannas scissors are ultra-fine spring-operated instruments for delicate membranes and retinal layers, and stitch scissors are built specifically for suture removal, the blade length and spring action follow the tissue being cut. Pattern selection matters more here than on general instruments, because these blades work at a scale where the wrong choice damages structures that do not regenerate.

Spring-Action, Ring Handle and Blade Curve
Two handle mechanisms cover this range. Spring-operated handles, the Vannas pattern's defining feature, return to open position automatically after each cut, which suits rapid, repeated fine cuts in membrane or capsule work where the surgeon does not want to actively reopen the blades between passes. Ring handles, as on the Westcott patterns, give a firmer grip for the slightly heavier cutting Westcott scissors perform, and let the surgeon control blade angle more deliberately in a confined orbital field.
Blade curve follows the same logic as elsewhere in ophthalmic instrumentation: a slight curve on Westcott blades follows the globe's contour and improves visibility during conjunctival dissection, while straight patterns suit direct-line cuts. Blunt tips, where specified, exist to protect tissue the surgeon is working near but not cutting, the globe itself, in the case of extraocular muscle work.
