This is a standard step in a thorough autopsy, particularly in trauma cases where the skull base must be examined for fractures or where the dura's mobility itself is diagnostic.

In older individuals, the dura often adheres to the skull and detaches when the skull cap is lifted; in other cases it must be actively stripped, and it can come away in pieces. The forceps grip that tissue and peel it back, from the midline where the superior sagittal sinus runs tightly adherent, outward to the skull base, clearing the inner table for a clean visual examination.
