What are Kirschner Wires?

Kirschner wires, also known as K wires, are sharpened metallic wires (stainless steel) that are used to keep bone fragments together (pin fixation) or as an anchor for skeletal traction. In orthopedics and other forms of medical and veterinary surgery, K wire (Kirschner wire) is commonly used in various surgical processes. To keep the pieces in place, these wires can be bored into the bone. These bone instruments can be implanted either percutaneously (through the skin) or subcutaneously (below the skin).

K-wires are commonly used to support a broken bone and may be removed once the fracture has healed. Threading on some K-wires helps prevent movement or backing out of the wire, but it can also make them more difficult to remove.

K Wire (Kirschner Wire) normally necessitates the use of a plaster cast.

Here are some advantages of using K Wire:

  • It is a cheap tool and is cost-friendly.
  • Accessible to everyone
  • It can be entered by hand (with a T-handle), but it may also be inserted with a drill if thermal harm is avoided.
  • Removal is simple.
