Fitting Number Decides the Handle
Scalpel handles are chosen on fitting number before anything else, because the number determines which blade series will seat. A No. 3 handle takes the small blade series used for fine skin incisions and delicate dissection; a No. 7 handle carries the same blades on a longer, slimmer shaft that reaches deeper with less of the hand in the field. Septal Knives Follow a Plane
Nasal and septal knives are not scalpels with different names. A septal knife is finding a plane rather than cutting across tissue: the submucous dissection separates mucoperichondrium from cartilage along a layer that already exists, and the blade is being used to lift and follow that layer rather than to divide it. Why Cartilage Takes a Different Blade
Cartilage takes its own blades. It is dense, elastic and springs back, so a blade that would divide soft tissue cleanly will skid across it or crush the edge instead of cutting it. Cartilage knives carry a stiffer blade and a shallower cutting angle so the edge bites rather than slides, which is what harvesting and trimming a graft requires if the edge is to stay smooth.

Material, Reprocessing and Certification
Every pattern is forged from German stainless steel and passivated for corrosion resistance across repeated cycles. Handles and fixed-blade knives are inspected differently and both matter: on handles, check the blade fitting for wear or spread, because a slot that no longer grips lets a blade rock under load, and confirm the shaft is straight so the blade sits where the hand expects it; on fixed-blade knives, examine the cutting edge under magnification for rounding or nicks, since a dulled nasal knife has to be pushed rather than drawn and pushing is what tears mucoperichondrium instead of lifting it. Clean immediately with a neutral-pH enzymatic solution, brushing into blade fittings before residue dries, then rinse with deionised water and dry fully, following the reprocessing instructions supplied.
