Reaming and Tapping Are Not the Same Preparation

Reaming removes material to open a canal to a known diameter. The flutes cut and the debris travels back along them, and the result is a smooth passage sized to accept an implant that sits against bone by contact rather than by thread engagement. That is what a smooth intramedullary pin needs, and what an elastic nail needs at its entry point.

Tapping does the opposite. It removes almost no material in bulk and instead cuts a thread profile into the wall of an existing hole, so a threaded implant advances by engaging that thread rather than by being driven. A screw placed into an untapped hole in dense cortex either cuts its own thread, if it is self-tapping, or generates torque the bone may not tolerate. The diameter that matters is different in each case: reaming diameter is the canal created, while tap diameter refers to the thread cut.

Why Diameter Has to Be Read Against the Implant

Diameter matching is the whole of the selection. An instrument that prepares a canal or a thread larger than the implant leaves the implant loose in bone that will not close around it; one that prepares smaller forces the implant, raising insertion torque and the risk of splitting a cortex the surgeon cannot see. There is no adjustment available afterwards, which is why the nominal diameter has to be read against the implant catalogue rather than assumed from the instrument alone.

Compatibility is decided by more than diameter. Where a thread is being cut, pitch and thread profile have to match the implant, and where a canal is being prepared, flute geometry and cutting direction determine how the bone responds. Buyers should confirm the intended implant system, catalogue reference, thread pitch where applicable, and drive method against the manufacturer's documentation before ordering.

Material, Reprocessing and Certification

The instrument is manufactured from German stainless steel and passivated for corrosion resistance across repeated cycles. The inspection point is the working end and the shaft: examine the cutting edges under magnification for chipping or rounding, because a dulled edge generates heat and torque rather than cutting, and check the flutes or thread crests are clear of packed bone before use. Sight along the shaft against a straight edge to confirm it is true, since an instrument that runs off axis in a canal will not follow the path it was started on. Clean immediately with a neutral-pH enzymatic solution, brushing debris out of the flutes before it dries, then rinse with deionised water and dry fully, following the validated reprocessing instructions supplied.
