Dental Curettes AF Type (Fig. 11/12): Precision Scaling for Deep Posterior Pockets
In advanced periodontal treatment, getting to the bottom of a deep pocket is the key to determining whether you have successful healing and ongoing infection. The AF Type (After-Five) Dental Curette Fig. 11/12 is a unique instrument that is designed to surpass the limits of conventional curettes. It is a modification of the original Gracey design. The "After-Five" series is the industry norm for treating patients suffering from pockets of periodontal tissue that are greater than 5 millimetres in depth.
The "After-Five" Engineering Advantage
The Fig. 11/12 AF type is specifically made for those who have the mesial surface of the posterior tooth (premolars as well as the molars). 1 . It has two important design changes that increase its clinical effectiveness:
-
Extra Long Terminal Shank. Its terminal shank measures 3 millimetres larger than the regular Gracey curette. 2 This length increases the ability of the clinician to access deep tooth surfaces and furcations without the handle blocking the crown of the tooth.
-
Thinned Working Edge: The blade has been made smaller by 10 per cent when compared to a conventional curette. This profile is thinner and allows for a smoother entry into the gingiva that is tight and inflamed, and allows for more access to the narrow growth grooves and contours of the root. 3
Premium Stainless Steel Construction
To ensure the highest level of clinical quality, these curettes are manufactured from the highest quality Stainless Steel. This material was chosen due to its capability to combine extreme hardness and the flexibility required for the sensitivity of the tactile.
- High Edge Retention . These stainless steel blades have been tempered so that they keep a razor-sharp cutting edge, which allows for efficient calculus removal using low pressure.
- Corrosion Resistance is designed to stand up to the stress of busy clinics. The instruments are immune to the chemicals employed in ultrasonic cleaning, as well as the steam's high temperatures sterilisation.
- high-tactile feedback The finely crafted steel transmits the vibrations of the tooth's surface to the doctor's hand, which allows for the precise identification of the presence of subgingival plaques.
Primary Clinical Applications
The AF Type Fig. 11/12 is a vital instrument for:
- Deep Subgingival Scaling , accessing mesial surfaces of molars within pockets 5mm or more.
- Advanced Root Planning: smoothing out the surface of the root of deep periodontal lesions to facilitate tissue reconnection.
-
Furcation Debridement . The long shank and the thin blade are ideal for manoeuvring through the intricate anatomy of the root system where it splits. 4
- Minimally Invasive Treatment: The smaller blade size minimises tissue adsorption, leading to a more pleasant treatment for patients.
