Veterinary Surgical Mallets

A surgical mallet delivers controlled striking force in orthopedic and bone surgery. In veterinary practice it is used with osteotomes, chisels and impactors, and to drive pins. Head material, size and weight decide how much force reaches the instrument and how much shock the instrument and bone absorb.

What’s in This Collection

The Lucae Bone Mallet (7½", 191mm) is a compact bone mallet. The Mallet Novotex Plastic (26cm long, 35mm head diameter) has a plastic head, so it strikes with less risk of marring the instrument. The Cottle Mallets have an 8" nylon-faced head for tapping osteotomes, which suits lighter, more controlled work. The Army Pattern Mallet is a classic pattern listed for post-mortem work and appears here as a crossover item. Check each product page for head material and weight.

Choosing a Mallet

Match the mallet to the strike. A larger or heavier head delivers more force for dense bone and heavy chisels, and a lighter nylon- or plastic-faced head gives finer control for osteotomes. A soft face also protects the striking surface of the instrument.

Care

Check that the head is secure and the face is undamaged before each use. Confirm that the head material is compatible with your sterilization method, because plastic and nylon faces may have temperature limits. Clean and sterilize according to your facility’s protocol.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a surgical mallet used for in veterinary orthopedics?
It strikes osteotomes, chisels and impactors, and drives pins, giving controlled force during bone work.

What’s the difference between a metal and a plastic or nylon-faced mallet?
A metal head delivers more force. A plastic or nylon face typically gives finer control and protects the instrument’s striking surface.

What size mallet should I choose?
Choose head size and weight to suit the strike. Heavier heads suit dense bone and heavy chisels, and lighter heads suit osteotomes and fine work.

Can a Cottle mallet be used in veterinary surgery?
A Cottle mallet is a nasal-surgery pattern for tapping osteotomes. It suits light bone work but isn’t a heavy-duty orthopedic mallet.

How should I sterilize a mallet with a plastic or nylon head?
Confirm that the head material is compatible with your sterilization method, because plastic and nylon faces may have temperature limits, and follow your facility’s protocol.
