Nothing in large animal practice happens until the animal is under control, and control of a 700kg bull is a matter of leverage rather than strength. Peak Surgicals supplies twelve livestock handling and husbandry patterns for cattle and swine, from $22.00, in German stainless steel and manufactured under ISO 13485. Compare the full range in the grid below.
Why Cattle Are Led by the Nose
Head control is the whole of cattle handling, and it is achieved through the nasal septum. The septum is densely innervated, so moderate, controlled pressure applied there produces a reliable response from an animal that cannot be moved by force. That is the principle every bull lead works on: the jaws close on the septum, the handler applies pressure through a lead rather than a push, and the head follows.
The patterns differ in how that pressure is held and transferred. Bull Lead Nose Clamp 2×3 inch ($33.00) and Harms Bull Lead 10 inch ($33.00) give direct control at the head. Spring Loaded Bull Lead ($27.50) holds its own closing pressure so the handler's grip is not what maintains the hold. Bull Lead with Chain ($38.50) and Bull Lead Without Chain or Hooks ($44.00) change how the lead attaches beyond the clamp. Steel Bull Ring 3 inch ($22.00) is the permanent version, placed through the septum in young bulls so a lead can be clipped to it thereafter.
Swine Handling and Routine Husbandry
Swine need a different approach because the anatomy offers no equivalent purchase. Hog Holder with Lock ($33.00) works on the upper jaw, holding position once set rather than requiring continuous tension, and Hog Ringer ($44.00) places rings in the snout to prevent rooting damage to pasture and fencing.
Routine husbandry follows once the animal is held. Balling Gun with Spring Clip ($38.50) delivers a bolus past the base of the tongue, which is the point at which an animal can no longer expel it, and Drench Pump ($49.50) administers measured liquid volumes. Barnes Dehorner 17 inch (from $44.00) removes horn buds in calves, with Jones Artery Forceps ($11.00) available for the vessel that bleeds afterwards. Manual Livestock Clipper ($49.50) prepares a site before injection or examination.
Material, Inspection and Care
Every pattern is manufactured from German stainless steel and passivated for corrosion resistance, in a facility operating under an ISO 13485 quality management system. Handling equipment is inspected differently from surgical instruments because it fails under load rather than in storage: check every hinge, jaw and swage on leads and clamps for deformation or spread, since a lead that opens under a bull's resistance is a hazard to the handler as much as to the animal; check spring mechanisms return fully and hold their set position; and check dehorner and clipper edges for chipping. Clean immediately after use, brushing thoroughly into joints and mechanisms, and dry fully before storage. Equipment used across animals should be cleaned and disinfected between them to farm biosecurity protocol.
