Foot and Ankle Instruments

Foot and ankle surgery works in a tight, tendon-dense area with little soft tissue over the bone, so exposure matters. This collection covers the retractors, spreader and bone forceps used to open the field, hold tissue clear and control bone during foot and ankle procedures.

What’s in This Collection

Self-retaining retractors. The Gelpi Crossover Retractor and the Weitlaner Retractor (with solid blades, or sharp) spread an incision and hold it open, which frees the surgeon’s hands. Solid blades spread tissue broadly, and sharp prongs grip tissue more firmly. Check the product page for the pattern you need.

Hand-held retractors. The Modified Mini Hohmann Retractors (multiple sizes) lever and protect soft tissue around bone in small joints and tight spaces.

Spreader. The Calcaneal Spreader (10cm, 6mm serrated blade) is a small spreader for separating bone or joint surfaces in calcaneal and other foot work.

Bone forceps. The Lewin Bone Forceps (7", slightly curved) grip bone and bone fragments during reduction and fixation.

Choosing Instruments

Choose a self-retaining retractor when you need sustained, hands-free exposure, and a Hohmann when you need to move or protect tissue as you work. Pick blade style and size to suit the depth and the tissue. Small, fine instruments suit the confined spaces of the foot.

Care

Clean joints, ratchets and serrations of tissue and bone debris immediately after use and check that ratchets lock and release smoothly. Sterilize according to your facility’s protocol.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a self-retaining retractor?
It holds an incision open on its own, usually with a ratchet or spring, so the surgeon’s hands are free. Gelpi and Weitlaner are common patterns.

What’s the difference between a Gelpi and a Weitlaner retractor?
Both are self-retaining. They differ in blade and prong design, so choose by the tissue and the depth of the incision.

What is a Hohmann retractor used for?
It levers and holds soft tissue away from bone. The mini version suits small joints and tight spaces.

What is a calcaneal spreader used for?
It separates bone or joint surfaces in calcaneal and other foot surgery, using a small serrated blade.

What are Lewin bone forceps used for?
They grip bone and bone fragments during reduction and fixation.

How should these instruments be cleaned?
Clean joints, ratchets and serrations of debris immediately, check that ratchets lock and release smoothly, and sterilize according to your facility’s protocol.
