Dental Excavators

Dental excavators are hand instruments used in restorative and endodontic dentistry to remove soft caries, refine cavity walls, and carve or contour material during a procedure. This collection currently carries two of the instruments that fall under that broader family of hand tools.

What's in This Collection

The #3 Hollenback Carver is a double-ended carving instrument used to shape and contour restorative material — composite, amalgam, or wax — after placement, giving clinicians fine control over occlusal anatomy and margins. The Outside Curved Root Elevator is used during extractions to loosen and elevate a tooth root from its socket before removal, a related but distinct step in oral surgery rather than caries excavation itself.

Finding the Right Excavator for the Job

If you're specifically looking for a caries excavator — the classic spoon-shaped instrument used to scoop out decay before a filling — that's covered in more depth in our Restorative Excavators collection. For root canal procedures, our Endodontic Excavators collection carries instruments built for canal access and debris removal. If it's specifically extraction support you need, alongside the root elevator here, browse our full Dental Extraction Instruments and Dental Luxation Elevators ranges for a complete extraction kit.

Related Instruments

For restorative work using the Hollenback carver, pair it with our Amalgam Carvers and Cavity Preparation Instruments. For extraction work, our Dental Elevator Sets and Dental Extracting Forceps collections round out the tray.
