Dental Instruments - Burnishers
In the dental restoration, dental burnishers are also used to smooth it up, remove any scratches that may have occurred during the dental restoration process on the amalgam surface and flatten any irregularities which arose as a result of the dental restoration.
The ends of these burnishers are angulated. They can be either single ended or double ended hand tools. One end or both working tips is flat and rounded for various dental burnishers depending on their designs.

These dental burnishers are used in different ways. An example is Ball Burnishers which are used to contour matrix band before amalgam placement and to burnish amalgam after condensation. Marginal seal can be achieved by using beavertail burnisher between the cast gold restoration and tooth in posterior restorations. Acorn-shaped burnishers are used to form occlusal anatomy in posterior restorations.
The most popular dental burnishers include the following:
Westcott calls its acorn-shaped burnisher B21. The tips of these instruments measure 2mm and 3mm in diameter respectively. It comes in a design which has black TNi as well as satin steel on the working points.
Designated B21B, these instruments also possess acorn shaped tips with sizes of 2.5mm and 3.5mm respectively. They all come with Black TNi Coated or Satin Steel working points.
These dental burnishers have the designation B26/29, and they have round and ovoid shapes.The size of their tips is 2mm and 5.5/3.5 respectively.Black TNi Coated or Satin Steel tipped ones are available.
Dental Burnishers B29/31 below contain working points shaped like an oval, measuring 4/2.5mm as oval one and 5.5/3mm for another one.
