Micro, Standard or Large Fragment: Sizing to the Patient

Micro fragment kits (1.5–2.7mm) serve toy-breed dogs, cats and small exotics with delicate cortical bone, standard kits (2.7–4.0mm) cover the majority of small-to-medium canine fracture work, and large fragment kits (4.5–6.5mm) handle the long bones of large-breed dogs — screw diameter follows bone size, and using an oversized screw in delicate bone risks the fracture it was meant to fix. This is the first and most consequential decision a kit purchase makes.

Micro Kit 1.5/2.0/2.7mm ($1,098.90) is built for the thin cortical bone of small patients where standard hardware would be too large. Why Locking Plates Changed Fracture Fixation

Locking plate-and-screw systems solve a problem non-locking hardware could not: they distribute mechanical load evenly across the fixation rather than concentrating it at points of direct plate-to-bone contact, and they do not require the plate to be precisely contoured to the bone surface to work. That matters clinically,  locking systems preserve more of the periosteal blood supply than compression plating, which reduces infection risk and supports faster healing, and the screws are markedly less prone to loosening under load.

Instrument sets follow the screwdriver the system requires: a hexagonal drive for cortical screws, a flat blade for self-tapping Sherman-pattern screws, and a star drive for locking screws specifically. A kit's completeness,  colour-coded drill bits, matched sleeves, the correct driver for every screw type,  is what separates a dedicated plating system from a drawer of mismatched hardware, and it is the difference this range is built to eliminate.

Reprocessing, Instrument Inventory and Certification

A plating kit carries a reprocessing and inventory burden beyond any single instrument: drill bits, taps, drivers, depth gauges and sleeves must each be accounted for and returned to a sterilization tray in sequence, and a missing component stops a procedure mid-fixation. Verify the complete kit inventory against the tray before autoclaving and before every case, and inspect drill bits and taps for wear,  a dulled cutting edge generates heat in bone rather than cutting it cleanly.
