Bennett Tibia Retractor for Tibial and Knee Exposure
The Meisterhand Bennett Tibia Retractor (9½", small blade) is built for tibial plateau and proximal tibia exposure in knee and lower-leg procedures, where a narrow, curved blade needs to hold soft tissue clear without crowding the joint. Its small radius follows the tibia's contour rather than sitting flat or angled the way a general Hohmann blade would — the shape is what makes it tibia-specific rather than a general-purpose exposure retractor.
Hohmann Retractors: Which Blade and Bend?
Hohmann retractors are the most-used pattern in general orthopedic exposure — a single-pronged blade that levers against bone while retracting soft tissue — and the choice between variants comes down to blade width and bend angle for the anatomy being exposed.
The Standard Hohmann Retractor (42mm blade, 15° bend) covers general long-bone exposure. Hohmann Retractor Square End 23cm trades the pointed tip for a flat end where broader purchase on bone is needed. Hohmann Mini Retractor (6mm blade) scales down for hand, foot and small-bone work where a standard blade would be too wide for the field. Hohmann Angled Retractor carries an offset blade for hip and knee exposure where a straight shaft would foul on surrounding anatomy. Retractor, Elevator or Lever: What's the Difference?
A retractor holds tissue out of the way; a lever or elevator applies force against bone itself, prying it into position or lifting periosteum off the surface. Reaching for the wrong one either fails to protect soft tissue or doesn't generate enough leverage to move bone.
Lane Bone Lever (21cm) is a true lever — its curved blade sets against bone to move a fragment rather than hold tissue back. Murphy Lane Bone Skid (31cm, double-ended 18mm and 30mm blades) works the same principle at femoral head and prosthesis seating, sliding beneath the bone to guide it into position. Chandler Elevator (7.5", 13mm blunt tip) lifts periosteum cleanly off bone without cutting through it. Femoral Neck Elevator, Small (15", 31mm blade) is purpose-built for proximal femoral exposure in hip procedures. Bone Hook (18cm, 10mm) grips and pulls rather than levers, useful for drawing a fragment into reach. Reprocessing and Certification
The blade edge and bend are the inspection points on these instruments: a bent or flattened blade angle changes how the retractor sits against bone, and a rounded or worn tip loses the grip that keeps it from slipping mid-procedure. Check both after every cycle, particularly on the narrower Hohmann and Bennett patterns, where a small deformation has an outsized effect on fit.
