Why the Sound Goes In First
Sounding is not a measurement step so much as a safety step, because the single largest cause of uterine perforation during dilation is a false passage rather than excessive force. A graduated sound follows the cervical canal and reports two things: how deep the cavity runs, and which way it is angled. A dilator entering without that information is entering blind, and once a false track is started each successive rod widens it.

Cylindrical or Conical? Tip Geometry and Force
Dilator tip geometry decides how much force the cervix has to absorb. A Hegar pattern is cylindrical with a blunt rounded end, which means it presents its full diameter almost immediately and needs more force to pass, and that force is exactly what raises the risk of laceration in an inelastic or pregnant cervix. A conical pattern tapers instead, so the canal opens progressively along the length of the rod rather than at the tip.

Material, Reprocessing and Certification
Every pattern is forged from German stainless steel and passivated for corrosion resistance across repeated cycles. The inspection point is the shaft and the tip: sight down the rod against a straight edge, because a bent shaft will not follow the canal it is meant to follow, and check the tip for burrs or flattening that would catch endocervical tissue on the way in. On sounds, confirm the graduation marks are still legible, since a worn scale is a reading taken from memory. Clean immediately with a neutral-pH enzymatic solution, rinse with deionised water and dry fully before autoclaving at 134°C.
