Vulsellum or Tenaculum: What the Extra Teeth Change

A vulsellum forceps carries two or more rows of opposing teeth, 2×2 or 3×3, that grip tissue across a broader surface, while a tenaculum uses a single sharp point that anchors at one spot; the vulsellum trades precision for holding power, which is why it is chosen where the grip must survive sustained traction through a longer procedure. This is the distinction buyers most often ask about, and it decides which instrument belongs on the tray.

Schroeder Uterine Vulsellum Forceps (PS-1718, $6.05) carries 2×2 inward-pointed prongs and is available in straight or curved-on-flat profiles, the pattern most gynaecology trays default to, used to hold the cervix steady during colposcopy, cervical biopsy and hysterectomy, and to manipulate the uterus during caesarean sections and postpartum procedures. Prong Count, Ratchet and Ring Handles

Prong count is the specification that decides how much tissue the jaws actually engage. A 2×2 pattern like the Schroeder concentrates grip at four points, sufficient for most cervical and uterine manipulation without excess tissue trauma. A 3×3 pattern like the Gordon spreads that grip across six points, holding more tissue surface for cases where a smaller bite risks slipping under traction, denser tissue, or where the instrument must hold position through a longer step of the procedure.

The ratchet-locking mechanism common to these patterns holds the jaws closed once engaged, freeing the surgeon's hands the way it does on a tenaculum, the surgeon does not maintain grip pressure through the whole procedure. Finger-ring handles give the leverage needed to close the ratchet against tissue resistance. Straight and curved-on-flat shaft options exist for the same reason shaft curve matters elsewhere in gynaecological instrumentation: a curved profile reaches around anatomy or improves the sightline where a straight shaft would obstruct it.
