What the Vectis Does During Lens Extraction

The Snellens Vectis ($13.20) is positioned beneath the lens during removal from the capsular bag, so the lens rests on the loop rather than dropping into the vitreous once the bag is opened. That single function,  a supporting surface rather than a gripping tool, is why the loop is blunt and why the working end is shaped to slide under the lens without cutting into surrounding tissue.

The technique is straightforward but the timing is precise: once the capsular bag is opened during extraction, the lens has nothing holding it in place, and an unsupported lens can fall posteriorly into the vitreous, a complication the vectis exists specifically to prevent. The loop is slid under the lens before that moment, so the lens is caught and guided out on the loop's surface rather than left to fall.
