Which Excavator: 31L, 31W, 32L or Glick?

The 31L reaches anterior and premolar pulp chambers, the 31W carries a wider blade for bulk debris, the 32L extends furthest for mandibular molars and maxillary posterior teeth, and the Glick pattern combines a spoon end with a plugger for placing temporary material. Shank length and blade width are the two variables, and the tooth position decides both.

Endo Excavator 31L (PS-D-130, $11.00) handles standard access pulp chamber debridement and canal orifice refinement where reach is moderate. 31W (PS-D-131, $11.00) trades reach for blade width, lifting more necrotic tissue per pass in an open chamber. 32L (PS-D-132, $11.00) is the deep-access pattern, built for distal lesions in mandibular molars where a shorter shank bottoms out against the opposing arch. The Glick Endo Excavator (PS-D-128, $6.60) works differently its double end pairs excavation with a plugger face for condensing temporary restorative material, so access and closure happen with one instrument. Endodontic or Restorative: Why the Shank Differs

A restorative excavator removes carious dentin from a cavity floor a few millimetres below the enamel surface. An endodontic excavator works at the bottom of an access cavity, often 15mm or more from the occlusal surface, and the terminal shank is lengthened and angled specifically for that depth. Using a restorative pattern for endodontic access means the handle fouls the opposing teeth before the blade reaches the chamber floor.

The blade behaves differently too. The concave spoon face is designed to scoop,  engaged under debris and lifted out,  rather than scrape across the dentin. Light exploratory pressure locates pulp horns and canal orifices without perforation risk; heavy lateral pressure on a long shank is how tips deform. Reprocessing, Edge Retention and Certification

These excavators are forged from German stainless steel, formed and ground to hold a working edge through repeated cycles. Edge retention is the specification that matters most on a hand instrument used against dentin: a dulled spoon stops lifting debris and starts burnishing it. Inspect the blade for deformation after each autoclave cycle, and ultrasonic-clean before sterilising so dentin debris and temporary material do not bake onto the concave face.
