Peak Surgicals supplies reusable hemostats across every standard pattern — Kelly, Crile, Halsted mosquito, Pean, Carmalt, Kocher and Ochsner — in straight and curved jaws. These are locking surgical hemostats built from German stainless steel, with a box lock and ratchet that holds a clamped vessel without hand pressure. Every hemostatic forceps in this range is CE marked and built under ISO 13485.

Hemostat Patterns Available

A hemostat, or hemostatic forceps, is a ratcheted instrument that clamps a bleeding vessel closed and locks in position, holding it without the surgeon’s hand until the vessel is tied, cauterized or released.

Kelly and Crile are the two standard mid-size patterns, distinguished by serration: Crile jaws are typically serrated along their full working length, while Kelly jaws commonly have serrations on the distal portion only. Halsted Mosquito and Jacobson Mosquito forceps are the fine patterns for small vessels in shallow tissue. Pean and Pean Micro carry transverse serrations on a heavier jaw. Carmalt combines longitudinal serrations with a cross-serrated tip, a configuration commonly used for secure pedicle clamping. Kocher and Ochsner are the toothed patterns, with interlocking teeth at the tip for dense tissue. Rankin, Coller, Meeker, Providence Hospital and Pratt Smith complete the range.

Jaw Designs and Locking Mechanisms

Serration decides grip. Transverse serrations along the full jaw distribute hold evenly across a clamped vessel; partial serrations concentrate it toward the tip; longitudinal serrations are used where a pedicle would otherwise slide lengthwise out of the jaw. Toothed patterns add interlocking teeth at the tip for tissue that serrations alone will not hold.

The box lock and ratchet distinguish locking hemostatic forceps from non-locking thumb forceps. The ratchet should engage and release smoothly, while the box lock should operate without excessive lateral play. Instruments should be inspected according to the manufacturer’s IFU and facility protocol.

Choosing the Right Hemostat

Work through it in order: vessel size sets the jaw, depth of field sets the length, and access decides straight or curved. Straight jaws suit superficial work where the bleeder sits directly in front of you. Curved jaws let the tip reach around a structure and keep the handle clear of your sightline, which is why both are stocked across the patterns above.

A mosquito in a deep pelvis is as wrong as a Carmalt on a subcutaneous bleeder. If you are building a tray rather than replacing a single instrument, tell us the procedure and we will put together a pattern mix.

Reusable Stainless Steel Hemostats

All patterns are made from German stainless steel and are CE marked and built under ISO 13485. They are supplied non-sterile and must be cleaned and sterilized before clinical use. Clean immediately after use so blood does not set in the box lock, and work the ratchet through its full travel during cleaning.
