Why Irrigate: Eschar, Rebleeding and Thermal Spread

Saline irrigation cools the forceps tips during coagulation, reducing eschar buildup so the coagulated tissue does not tear away when the instrument is lifted,  the mechanism that causes rebleeding with dry bipolar tips. The problem is well documented: charred tissue adheres to the electrode, and avulsing it on withdrawal both reopens the vessel and traumatises the surrounding field.

Cooling has a second effect. A tip running cooler transfers less heat laterally, so the coagulation stays where it was aimed the same reason bipolar is chosen over monopolar for work near nerve or vessel. Irrigation also keeps the field visible, flushing blood from the point of contact rather than leaving the surgeon to coagulate through it. Tip size is the third variable: 0.3 mm for microsurgical and neurosurgical work where the coagulation margin is measured in fractions of a millimetre, 1.0 to 2.0 mm where tissue bulk demands a broader contact face. Straight or Bayonet, and Why European Pin Matters

Two shaft profiles solve two access problems. European Irrigation Bipolar Forceps (PS-1046, $50.60) and the Straight pattern (PS-1047, $68.20) run the working tips in line with the shank, direct, shortest path, best where the field is open and shallow. European Irrigation Bayonet Bipolar Forceps (PS-1044, $44.00) step the shank sideways instead, so the hand and shaft sit clear of the sightline down a deep or narrow corridor. That is the whole reason the bayonet exists, and it is why deep neurosurgical and transsphenoidal work defaults to it.

The European designation is a connector standard, not a style. European pin forceps mate with generators wired to that standard; a USA-pin instrument will not seat correctly in a European-pin socket. Confirm the generator's connector before ordering,  it is the single most common procurement error on bipolar instruments. Reprocessing, Insulation and Certification

The irrigation channel is the reprocessing point unique to these instruments: it must be flushed clear after every use, because saline residue drying inside a narrow lumen blocks flow and defeats the cooling the forceps were bought for. Ultrasonic cleaning before autoclaving clears the tips; insulation should be inspected on a regular cycle, since a breached coating routes current into tissue it was never meant to reach.
