What the Wertheim Pattern Does

The Wertheim Parametrium Forceps ($24.20) is a 254mm curved instrument that clamps the parametrium and uterine vessels during hysterectomy, with a ratcheted finger-ring handle that holds the clamp closed so the surgeon's hand is free for ligation. Length and curve are what define it: the parametrium sits deep in the pelvis, and a shorter straight instrument puts the hand in the field before the jaws reach the tissue.

The curve follows pelvic anatomy rather than cutting across it, so the jaws seat on the ligament while the shanks stay clear of the pelvic sidewall. Elongated shafts carry that reach. The ratchet is the second half of the design, parametrial clamping is held, not gripped, because the surgeon needs both hands for suture placement once the vessel is secured.
