Why Autopsy Forceps Are Ordered Separately
Mortuary instruments stay in the mortuary, and the separation runs one way: an instrument used post mortem does not return to clinical circulation. That is why these patterns are catalogued and marked as autopsy instruments rather than sold as general theatre forceps, and why a department orders them as a distinct set rather than drawing from operating room stock.
The build follows from the same logic. Post-mortem tissue offers different resistance to tissue in a living field, with no perfusion, no elasticity and often rigor working against the grip, so the patterns run heavier through the shank and blunter at the tip than their clinical equivalents. Treves Dissecting Forceps 203mm (8") 1/2 Teeth ($27.50) is the classic example, named for the British surgeon Sir Frederick Treves, and built with blunt tips that hold without piercing what they hold. Teeth or Serrations? Dissect or Displace
Teeth or serrations is the only real selection question here, and it turns on whether the tissue will be dissected or displaced. A 1/2 tooth configuration, one tooth meeting two, anchors positively in skin, fascia and dense connective tissue and is the pattern for opening a plane. Serrated jaws hold across a surface instead, which is what viscera, membranes and delicate structures need when they are being moved rather than cut.
Dissecting Forceps 19cm (7.5") Turn Over End Serrated ($27.50) carries the serrated pattern at a shorter working length for close work, and Block End Dissecting Forceps Straight Serrated (from $27.50) presents a flat block tip that spreads grip over a wider contact area for the heaviest handling. Most autopsy sets carry both configurations for the same reason theatre sets do: no single jaw covers a whole examination.
Material, Reprocessing and Certification
Every pattern is forged from German stainless steel and passivated for corrosion resistance across repeated cycles. The inspection point is the tip and the spring: hold the forceps closed and check the tips meet squarely with no daylight, check the teeth or serrations for flattening, and release the arms to confirm the spring returns fully without sag, since a weakened spring means the hand supplies grip the instrument should. Post-mortem instruments carry a heavier soil burden than theatre instruments, so clean immediately with a neutral-pH enzymatic solution, brushing along the serrations before residue dries, then rinse with deionised water and dry fully before autoclaving at 134°C.
