Plaster cast breakers are removal instruments, not surgical ones: they come out after the fracture has healed, to open a set plaster cast without a blade near the patient's skin. Peak Surgicals stocks two Wolff-Boehler patterns: Wolf Boehler Plaster Cast Breaker (PS-8709, $27.50) and Wolf Boehler Plaster Cast Breaker 18cm and 24cm (PS-8708, $38.50), both in German stainless steel and CE-marked and built under ISO 13485. Compare both patterns in the grid below.

How Does a Cast Breaker Open Set Plaster?

A cast breaker is a double spring plier, and the double spring is what makes it work: handle travel is multiplied at the jaws, so hand pressure alone generates enough force to fracture set plaster that would otherwise need a powered saw. Deep serrations across the jaw faces stop the tip skating off the cast surface as that force builds.

The jaw is driven into the plaster to start a break line, then worked along it until the shell splits and can be spread open. Wolf Boehler Plaster Cast Breaker (PS-8709, $27.50) covers standard limb casts, and Wolf Boehler Plaster Cast Breaker 18cm and 24cm (PS-8708, $38.50) supplies both working lengths for departments handling paediatric and adult casts on the same list. We supply every pattern at MOQ 1.

Rounded Tips, Length and Patient Safety

The rounded jaw tip is the patient safety feature, and it is the specification worth checking before buying. A cast sits directly against skin, so a squared or worn tip presses into tissue as the jaw closes through the last few millimetres of plaster. A rounded tip spreads that contact and keeps the working edge on the cast rather than under it.

Length decides reach and leverage together. The 18cm pattern is easier to control on smaller limbs and thinner shells, while the 24cm pattern gives the longer handle travel needed for thick adult casts. Both are used alongside a cast spreader, which takes over once the break line is complete and holds the shell open for removal.

Material, Reprocessing and Certification

Both patterns are forged from German stainless steel and passivated for corrosion resistance across repeated cycles. The inspection point on a cast breaker is the jaw and the spring: check the serrations for packed plaster and the tip for flattening that would turn a rounded profile square, then open and release the handles to confirm the spring returns fully with no sag. Clean immediately after use with a neutral-pH enzymatic solution, brushing plaster residue out of the serrations before it sets, then rinse with deionised water and dry fully before autoclaving at 134°C.
