Spreader or Plugger: Which for Which Technique?
A spreader has a pointed, tapered tip that wedges alongside the master cone to open lateral space for accessory cones, while a plugger has a flat tip that compacts gutta-percha vertically toward the apex, the pointed versus flat tip is the whole distinction, and it decides the obturation technique. Cold lateral condensation is the spreader's technique; warm vertical compaction is the plugger's.
In lateral condensation, the spreader is pre-fit to within 1 to 2mm of the working length before obturation begins. After the master cone is seated, the spreader is forced down alongside it, wedging the cone against the canal wall and opening a channel; when withdrawn, an accessory cone is placed into that channel, and the cycle repeats until the canal is filled. Tip taper matters here an accessory cone larger than the spreader's taper produces voids, so cone and spreader are matched. The MA57 (PS-D-103), GP2 (PS-D-101) and GP3 (PS-D-102) spreaders run defined ISO tapers from 0.20mm, while the posterior spreader (PS-D-095, 0.55mm) carries an angled shank for molar access. Tip Taper, Working Length and Fit
Tip taper is the specification that governs the fill. A spreader pre-fit to 1–2mm short of the working length defines how deep the accessory cones seat, and the taper determines how much lateral space each pass opens — too aggressive a taper wedges the master cone hard against the wall and risks vertical root fracture, too fine a taper opens insufficient space and leaves voids. Finger spreaders short-handled instruments controlled by the fingers, give the tactile feedback that lateral condensation depends on, letting the operator feel resistance and stop before over-wedging. Shank length and angle set the reach: straight patterns work anterior and premolar canals, while the posterior pattern's angled shank clears the opposing arch for molar access. Working-end markings verify depth against the radiographic working length. The technique is controlled placement, not force the spreader opens space, it does not drive the fill.
Reprocessing, Tip Integrity and Certification
