Steel, Nylon or Polymer? The Face Decides the Strike

Head material decides how the strike arrives. A solid stainless head transmits force almost undiminished, so an osteotome advances through cortical bone with the fewest taps and the operator feels exactly what the edge is doing. That directness is what heavy bone work needs, and it is why Orthopedic Heavy Mallet and Mallet Stainless Steel carry all-steel heads.

A nylon or polymer face does the opposite on purpose. It absorbs part of the impact and spreads the remainder over a longer contact time, which softens the blow at the instrument being struck and reduces the shock travelling back up the surgeon's arm. That matters where the working end sits close to structures a full-force strike would carry it into, and where a run of controlled light taps is preferable to fewer heavy ones. Faced mallets are also quieter, which is not a trivial consideration in a long list. We supply every pattern at MOQ 1.

Weight, Face Diameter and Double-Ended Patterns

Weight and face diameter set the rest. A heavier head delivers more energy per tap and suits large-bone work where the instrument has to advance through thick cortex; a lighter head gives more taps for the same total advance and more chance to stop at the right point. Face diameter follows the striking end it meets: a face narrower than the osteotome head risks glancing contact, a much wider one adds mass without adding accuracy.

Orthopedic Mallets and Lucae Bone Mallets are supplied double-ended, which puts two face sizes or two materials on one instrument and removes an exchange from the sequence. Material, Reprocessing and Certification

Every pattern is manufactured from German stainless steel and passivated for corrosion resistance across repeated cycles, with nylon or polymer faces on the patterns supplied that way. The inspection point on a mallet is the striking face and the head-to-handle junction: check the face for mushrooming or spread at the rim, because a deformed face throws the strike off axis and no longer meets the osteotome squarely, and on faced patterns check for cracking, flattening or any looseness in the insert. Grip the head and twist against the handle to confirm the junction is solid, since a head that has worked loose delivers an unpredictable strike. Clean immediately with a neutral-pH enzymatic solution, working around the head junction and the face seat, then rinse with deionised water and dry fully, following the reprocessing instructions supplied.
