What are Kirschner Wires?
Kirschner wires which can also be called K-wires, are sharpened metallic (stainless steel) wires used either to pinfixation or in this case as an anchor for skeletal traction to hold together fragments of bones or immobilize bone fractures. In different surgical procedures in orthopedics, including other forms of medical and veterinary surgery, the use of K wire (Kirschner wire) is common practice. These wires when passed through the bones, keep them in place after they have been broken into several pieces. Besides, these bone instruments may be introduced percutaneously (through the skin) or subcutaneously (underneath the skin).
K-wires offer support while healing from a fractured bone but can be taken out afterwards. Some k-wires’ threads prevent movement or backing out within it, nonetheless this could make them harder to remove too.
Normally plaster cast is necessary for K Wire (Kirschner Wire).
Here some benefits associated with using K Wire:
- It is an inexpensive tool and affordable.
- Can be handled manually
- Usually inserted by hand (with a T-handle), although one should use a drill if there’s no thermal harm.
- The removal process is quite easy.
